Tuck Kee Ipoh Sah Hor Fun is home to Hong Lim Food Centre’s famous crayfish hor fun, and we had to check it out.
Nestled in a corner of Hong Lim Food Centre, this unassuming crayfish hor fun store does serve food other than crayfish hor fun. Expect to be able to order shredded chicken hor fun, prawn hor fun, and even dumpling soup.
Open from just 11am to 3pm daily, its operating hours are testament to its popularity. Tuck Kee Ipoh Sah Hor Fun sees long queues at lunchtime, but head down after peak hour like we did and you’ll get your crayfish hor fun fix served to you in no time at all.
For S$6.50, you get a whole crayfish cut into two for easy pickings, a generous handful of sliced and deshelled prawns, and perfectly done hor fun, all doused liberally in a flavourful brown gravy. The crayfish and prawns are fresh and well cooked, and the hor fun is springy and soft, but it’s really the gravy that seals the deal for this dish.
Apparently made out of prawns, prawn heads, and chicken bones with the addition of flour to thicken it, the gravy pulls the entire dish together to make it a truly memorable experience. Pair it with a generous sprinkle of fried shallots and freshly chopped spring onions, and you have Tuck Kee Ipoh Sah Hor Fun’s ubiquitous crayfish hor fun.
Some folks swear by the stall’s chilli, though I didn’t enjoy how it went with the crayfish hor fun. Do take note that the serving of hor fun is not exactly filling and you may find yourself hungry for something more satisfying soon after. Still quite a decent gastronomical experience when it comes to hawker food, though, simply because of its unique ingredients.
