Thai Lion Kitchen @ Tiong Bahru Market

Thai Lion Kitchen

Given that Singaporeans are known for eating out on most days, possibly due to their hectic work schedules, it will come as no surprise that hawker centres open for dinner (although we would notice most of the popular venues closing just after lunch). Take Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre for instance. It’s absolutely packed on mornings, with snaking queues at literally every corner. But when dusk falls, the ambience starts to alter to one that is empty and elusive – a stark contrast to the busy morning madness!

One of the stalls that operate during dinnertime will be Thai Lion Kitchen. Yes, our love for Thai food hasn’t wavered even when we’re back in Singapore. This gives us more reason to rate their dishes with a more critical scorecard!

First up will be the mango salad. You’ll notice the generous portions of peanuts (sai tua in Thai speak) at first glance, probably even more than those you consume in Bangkok. The taste is typical Thai – sweet, salty and spicy all in a spoonful. And at SGD$5, it’s pretty bang for buck for the portion!

Next up will be the Thai-style vermicelli. The vermicelli is soaked in dark gravy sauce, accompanied by thick chunks of vegetables and prawns. Another dish worth ordering! We’d suggest just ordering this if you’re here alone. A massive portion that will be more than enough to cure your hunger pangs.

The basil prawn rice is probably a taste that we really missed ever since we returned from Bangkok. Nothing beats the authentic spice of basil leaves – the spiciness that penetrates gives it a distinctive flavour. Add a fried egg (kai dao) and you’re good to go!

And of course, we wouldn’t leave a Thai hawker stall without trying out their standard of green curry. And it didn’t disappoint! Thick, punchy and smooth – just like what you get in Bangkok. They are generous with the chicken, too.

Thai Lion Kitchen has been around at the same hawker centre since 2011. We might have overlooked it over the years, but now that our taste buds are tuned towards Thai flavours, we will get our fix here more often!
