West Coast Hawker Centre might not on the top of your list if you’re not a Westie. The less-than-convenient location makes us all the more reluctant to venture into the West Coast area too. The nearest MRT Station will be Clementi, but you’ll need to take a bus to West Coast Plaza, before arriving across the road at this hawker centre.
So what’s in it that’s worth the travel? Soon Fish Soup is not your regular stall, although the dish might look strikingly similar to what you’ll get anywhere else. For a start, they are very, very generous with their fish slices. For the $5 portion, I counted no less than 12 (yes, 12!) portions of chunky fish slices, hiding within the bee hoon. They are fresh, juicy and tasty – just what you need if you opt for this over the fried fish alternative.
The soup has no lack of punch, too. It’s clear and not overly salty, which gives the fish full authority to take charge of the overall taste. Lovely. The bee hoon is bouncy, and should be consumed with the fish to balance off the flavour. If you can take chilli, drop in a couple of cut chilli to give it that bit of extra “kick” – and there you’ll have a pretty inexpensive, but very satisfying meal.
Due to the location (although West Coast residents might beg to differ!), we might have second thoughts revisiting the area. Traffic at Clementi can also be a major issue if you drive during the peak hours. There are equally good fish noodle stalls that serve fresh and juicy fish, but portions will not be as generous as this. If you’re willing to brave the crowd and inconvenience, you’ll be rewarded at the end!
