With the Pokemon Go craze slowly fizzling out, restaurants selling crabs will now have to rely solely on the quality of their own crabs (instead of Pokemon characters!) to lure customers! It’s not the easiest dish to master, we have to admit. Did we have our cravings satisfied over at Master Crab @ Choa Chu Kang?
This outlet located at Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3 is Master Crab’s second outlet. The first outlet is located at an arguably more convenient and popular location just beside the newly renovated Ghim Moh Hawker Centre. We loved the thick, punchy flavour of the soup – a flavour that might even topple the Mellben stronghold! Yes, it was that good during our first experience at the Ghim Moh branch.
Now that our expectations haven’t wavered, we were keen to try another massive serving of crab bee hoon. We were here instead of the Ghim Moh branch as they didn’t have big crabs (700g at best). The one we had was priced at SGD$64 for a crab that weighs slightly over 1kg.
And yes, the taste of the crab might be equally juicy and tasty. But we found that the soup is a tad more diluted than the other branch. That’s not to say that it is not tasty, but we would prefer the flavour to be sharper and more effective in capturing our taste buds right from the first spoonful!
We also ordered the long bean with minced meat (SGD$8). It complements the main dish well, with a generous serving of long beans drenched in thick, chewy minced meat. We might patronise this outlet for the zhi cha in the near future, and satisfy our cravings for crabs and crab soup at the Ghim Moh branch, even if it meant smaller crabs! It’s the taste that counts after all, and we’re always willing to compromise quantity for quality!
