Jurong East was once widely regarded as a “ghost town” – not anymore! With JEM, Westgate, Big Box and J Cube situated just beside the Jurong East MRT, it makes those residing in the West feel whether it’s worth the journey to Orchard Road, when you can find more than 70 per cent of the shops in your backyard!
Our recommendation isn’t exactly located close to the MRT, but the evolution of this neighbourhood has naturally led us to explore deeper, this time leading towards the quieter confines of Block 318 along Jurong East Street 31.
This is not your typical glamourous, air-conditioned restaurant. But we actually prefer these understated locations because they are often less crowded, and packs a neat surprise!
At Ju Feng Garden Kitchen, you will be spoilt for choice just like any other zhi cha stalls. We narrowed in on the specialty – fish head curry (SGD$20.00). We’re not massive fans of this dish, but this doesn’t mean that we are unable to appreciate a good broth of curry. It is thick, tasty and flavourful till the last drop. And the tenderness of the fish makes it all the more addictive. We might even head back for a second meal within the week given its close proximity from home!
The shrimp paste mid joint wings (or har cheing gai in Singaporean speak) arrived next. And we were surprised how its taste manages to dominate the entire meal even though we consumed the fish head curry first. This shows the amount of flavour put into the shrimp paste – a fragrant, crispy skin that would be best consumed piping hot!
The less “sinful” meal of the trio will be the homemade tofu with minced meat. Grab a bite with a spoonful of gravy for the most satisfying effect. The crunchiness of the carrot blends well with the cut mushrooms’ bounciness, and both complements the smooth tofu to perfection. A pleasant dish to accompany stronger flavours from the fish head curry and har cheong gai.
If you reside within the vicinity and always struggle to leave your bed on lazy days, fret not, because they do deliveries around nearby blocks. And yes, Ju Feng Garden Kitchen’s dishes would be on top of our list for deliveries over usual fast food!
