Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert at Bedok Point

Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert Cafe

If you’re in the neighbourhood and looking to satiate your stomach with tastes slightly further from home, head on down to the Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert joint at Bedok Point.

Not just a Hong Kong styled dessert cafe, Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert also serves full meals of noodles or rice. Their lunch offers include a drink or a small dessert if you top up an extra S$1.50. But does the food at Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert match up to what you pay for it? On average, eating at Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert will cost about S$5 just for the main dish alone.

My lunch partner and I both ordered wantan mee, but decided against getting a dessert via the lunch deal as the ones offered were very small portions. We instead ordered full sized desserts, which were served only after we were done with our mains. Kudos for the extra service we were definitely not expecting from this eat-and-go joint. The wantan mee’s noodles were firm and well cooked, but the dish lacked ingredients on a whole. Wantans were served generously – five in total – but there was little else but blanched veggies inside the soup.

It’s with its Hong Kong styled desserts that Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert really shines. Though there were unique confections available, like jelly moulded into hor fun strands, we chose to go with our favourites – mango pomelo sago and pulut hitam with ice cream. The mango pomelo sago was a little on the sourish side, but at approximately S$4 a bowl for desserts, the servings and the quality of food were worth the price. The pulut hitam was served with coconut ice cream and coconut milk, and was nothing less than I expected.

Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert definitely borders on the high end of pricing when you consider its menu and ambiance. The Bedok Point outlet is an open concept one and depending on where you sit, you’re likely to be eating beside the hips of passersby. However go a little later after peak mealtimes, and you’re guaranteed a nice, quiet experience.
